The event in Georgia dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the crime in Sumgait

On February 28, in Tbilisi hosted an evening of memory dedicated to Armenians, who became a victim of the massacre in Sumgait in 1988.

For the innocent victims of crime , organized and committed in Sumgait Baku, Kirovabad and Maragheh, in the course of public policy ethnic cleansings and deportations, in the church Echmiadzin  St. Gevorg held a requiem service, which was attended by the Primate of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Georgia Hovhannes Manoukian, the representatives of clergy, Armenian Embassy officials, members of Armenian community, representatives of sports, cultural and educational organizations and others.

The Holy Father in his homily reminded about the crime committed quarter of century ago over the Armenian population of Sumgait and other areas. Participants of the liturgy remember the victims of the tragedy with a minute of silence.

On the Memory evening, later held in the cultural center "Hayartun" with the participation of many members of the community and representatives of various cultural and social organizations, the opening speech was made by Ambassador Hovhannes Manoukian.

In his speech, Ambassador of Armenia, in particular, spoke about the fact that the atrocities committed in the 80th years of the last century in Azerbaijan, have been implemented under the patronage and connivance of the Soviet authorities, about what is happening the present day, distortion and falsification of historical facts, the short-sighted policy of the Azerbaijani authorities conducting destructive approach to the negotiation process, and the anti-Armenian propaganda.

          

Then the historian Karen Hovhannisyan read a report about the history of Artsakh and the legitimate right of its people to self-determination.

During the evening, is also held a show of excerpts of the documentaries on developments in Sumgait, Baku and Maragheh.

At the end of the evening the words of gratitude and blessing made ​​by the Primate of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan.
