Armenian Ambassador met with the Public Defender of Georgia

On February 28, 2013, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Armenia to Georgia Hovhannes Manoukian met with the newly appointed Public Defender of Georgia (Ombudsman) Ucha Nanuashvili.

During the meeting, the interlocutors discussed a number of issues concerning the rights and responsibilities of the various sectors of the population, ways of cooperation between Armenia and Georgia, as well as other issues of mutual interest.

In response to a question raised by the Ambassador Manoukian, concerning the protection, restoration and the return to the ownership of the Georgian Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church, the so called "controversial" churches, Public Defender of Georgia has expressed his concern over this issue, stressed that its immediate solution impedes number of circumstances, but at the same time gave optimistic assessments regarding the upcoming settlement. Pointing to the new political situation in Georgia, the Ombudsman stated that the government is also concerned about this issue and has a genuine desire to solve it jointly.

The meeting participants agreed to the fact, that issue of controversial Armenian churches should not be seen as a problem between Armenia and Georgia, and that the duty of the state is to protect the fundamental right of citizens to freedom of religion and belief.

Hovhannes Manoukian and Ucha Nanuashvili stressed that for the effective integration of Georgian citizens of Armenian origin into Georgian society, particularly in Javakhk, new steps are needed by the authorities.

The Ambassador also conveyed to interlocutor an invitation from his Armenian counterpart to visit Armenia, which was adopted by the Georgian Ombudsman.
