The ceremony of opening of a memorial plaque In honour of Raffi (Hakob Melik Hakobian) in Tbilisi

13 March, 2014

On March 13, with the initiative of the Embassy of RA to Georgia and with the support of Tbilisi City Hall, was held an opening ceremony of a memorial plaque in honour of Raffi (Hakob Melik Hakobian) on Chonqadze 3  street where resided the Armenian talented writer and public figure.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of RA to Georgia Hovhannes Manoukian made an opening speech at the ceremony. He particularly mentioned:  “Raffi’s was a writer endowed with a vivid imagination, keen observation and unbounded idealism. We all know his tendentious novels and stories such as “Khent”, “Sparkles”, “Samuel”, “David-Bek” depicting the hardships the Armenian people faced. He gained insight into the baser side of mankind through real life experience. Raffi's novels are full of patriotic motives and they portray representatives of the younger generation as courageous and independent people full of sympathy for their nation, ready to work and struggle”.

Ambassador Manoukian mentioned the importance of opening of the memorial plaque in honour of Raffi and expressed his gratitude to the Georgian authorities and in particular Tbilisi city authorities for assisting such initiations.

The representative of Tbilisi City Hall Mamuka Katsarava, the Chairperson of the Georgian Writers' Union Makvala Gonashvili, head of “Tbilisi Armenian Union” organization Mikael Tadevosov and the writer-translator Anahit Bostanjyan also made a speech at the event.

The deputy of the Georgian Parliament Ruslan Poghosyan, the representative of the Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in Georgia Narek Gushyan, the editor in chief of "Georgia" newspaper Van Bayburt, the diplomatic staff of the Embassy of RA to Georgia, Armenian and Georgian cultural and public figures attended the ceremony.

Opening of the memorial plaque became possible thanks to the financial support of the Armenian entrepreneur Samvel Agekyan.
