Commemorative Event Dedicated to the Victims of Pogroms in Sumgait, Baku and Kirovabad Held in Tbilisi

A commemorative event dedicated to the victims of pogroms in Sumgait, Baku and Kirovabad was held in Tbilisi on 28 of February, 2017, which was organized by the joint efforts of Armenian organizations in Tbilisi.

The event, which was attended by the staff of the Embassy of Armenia in Georgia, the clergy of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, Armenian and Georgian intellectuals, community and public figures, other representatives of the Armenian community, began with a prayer for the repose of the souls with the participation of the Primate of the Armenian Diocese in Georgia, His Grace Bishop Vazgen Mirzakhanyan and the clergy.
A minute of silence was observed in memory of the victims.

First Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Georgia, Artur Sargsyan; the Chairman of the NGO Armenian Community of Georgia, Samvel Mkrtchyan, the Coordinator of the Georgian Armenians’ Union, Mari Arakelova, Founder of The Peace Foundation, Giorgi Tumasyan; delivered speeches. The speakers touched upon the inhumane acts, presented the response of international media and political scientists to the massacres of Armenians condemning the slaughter and brutality in Azerbaijan, in 1988-1991. They reflected on continuing policy of violence on the border of Artsakh, where, even today, Armenian soldiers are killed by Azeri bullet.

A documentary film about the Pogroms in Sumgait, Baku and Kirovabad was screened during the evening. Armenian duduk was sounded by young musicians and Armenian classical music was performed. The commemorative event concluded with a performance by the Makar Yekmalyan Choir of the Cathedral of Saint George.
